An overwhelming amount of California sea lions sick with domoic acid poisoning have been showing up on the beaches of Southern California for the past couple of weeks. Strong upwelling of nutrient filled water from the deep ocean is driving a bloom of harmful algae. This algae produces a neurotoxin, domoic acid, that can poison sea lions and other marine mammals. Domoic acid not only contaminates shellfish and other small fish that feed off the bloom, but can poison Marine mammals such as California sea lions that consume the contaminated fish. The toxin accumulates in their bodies and can cause seizures, unpredictable behavior, brain damage, still birth, and even death. According to climate scientists, a newly established link between warmer ocean temperatures and toxin-spawning algae provides the latest sign that climate change is causing biological disturbances in the oceans. Dave Bader, chief operations and education officer at the Marine Mammal Care Center in San Pedro, CA, says as oceans warm, more toxic algae outbreaks will occur, and this years’ outbreak is on track to be the worst one yet. He believes it will be worse than the bloom that occurred in 2023, which killed 1,000 sea lions. Domoic Acid events used to occur every 4-7 years, but now they occurring yearly with worse toxicity each year. Marine centers are overwhelmed with sick sea lions. The Marine Mammal Center in San Pedro, CA has so many patients they have had to expand their operations into the parking lot. Pregnant females lose their pups since the toxin passes through to the fetus. If something isn’t done to lessen the degree of impact, in years to come we could possibly begin to lose the species. @epa_images
